Oakwood University Church Opens Family Life Center

[dropcap letter=”H”]istory was made on February 24, 2018, as the long-awaited dream of a Family Life Center for the Oakwood University Church was realized, as the ribbon was cut and the doors were opened to this newly constructed 22,000 square foot facility.

This “state-of-the-art” facility houses a regulation-sized gymnasium, technologically proficient classrooms, commercial kitchen, barber shop, vegetarian food market, health services clinic, and outreach ministry areas for food and clothing distribution.

Under the direction of Dr. Carlton P. Byrd, Senior Pastor, the Oakwood University Church Family Life Center will become a place where the church can have “a direct and lasting impact on the residents of Huntsville and North Alabama.”

Of particular note in the Family Life Center is the gymnasium, which is named in honor of Mrs. Christine Johnson, mother of NBA Hall of Famer, Earvin “Magic”
Johnson, who along with his wife, Cookie, contributed $500,000 to the building construction.

Special guests present for the ribbon cutting ceremony were the Johnson family; the Honorable Tommy Battle, Mayor of Huntsville; Dr. Leslie Pollard, President of Oakwood University; and Dr. John Nixon and Mrs. Sonja Crayton, South Central Conference Executive Secretary and Treasurer, respectively.
